Growing up surrounded by food, Alex had always wanted to be a Chef, even while working as an Engineer in his native home country, Chile. It became a reality when he moved to Australia over three years ago. With his burning passion for cooking still in mind, Alex enrolled in a Certificate IV Commercial Cookery course. As fate would have it, Avalon Village was looking for a Kitchen Hand and reached out to the college he was attending. Alex jumped at the chance to apply for it and was hired on the spot!
With his persistence and eagerness to learn on the job, Alex soon moved into the Chef role and finally realised his dream of being one within a year of on-site training.
Alex begins his day at 5.30 am, preparing breakfast, morning tea, lunch service, and meals for the next day with the team. He especially enjoys the weekly Friday-themed lunches, which showcase international cuisines to the residents. Alex exclaims that part of the joy of cooking is sharing it with other people.
Some dishes Alex misses most about home are Pestel de Choclo (Corn Pie) and Empanedas (Savoury Pastries). Avalon's lucky residents don't have to go far to sample some of these South American favourites.
When asked what his favourite go-to food is, Alex naturally chooses Neopolitan Pizza, one of life's simple pleasures, and, of course, with his grandfather, also hailing from Italy!
